Be water responsible english 1

The world is changing, so let’s adapt today: together let’s act at the source !

We are part of the Living. Today’s challenge is to preserve it, to be inspired by it, to adapt to climate changes and continue to inhabit Earth!

Our body is about 65% water. Drinking water is essential for our health ! On Earth, there is only 1% freshwater available. 97% of water is salty and 2% of freshwater is not available. 1 out of 3 person on Earth doesn’t have drinking water.

Every day, a European uses around 4,150 liters of water and generates 200 grams of pollution!

‣ 150 liters of water are visible, used for the domestic consumption : showers, washing machines, toilets and sinks.

Where does 4,000 L of water per person daily come from ?

Our water usages are similar to an iceberg. There is a visible part and an invisible part.

‣ 4,000 liters of water are invisible. This consumption results in the production of items we use everyday, our food, our objects… This invisible water that we consume without knowing about it, is called Virtual Water.

Virtual water is the amount of water ‘embedded’ in a product.

The water consumed to produce our food plays the biggest part of  Virtual Water : intensive farming, transportation, pesticides and chemical fertilizers… From production to consumption, our food model contributes to global warming, pollution, the depletion of natural resources and the collapse of biodiversity.

The items we use daily, such as clothes, computers, smartphones also play a huge part in Virtual Water. They are produced far away with limited ressources. Plus, their transportation to the stores runs on fossil fuels : they are increasingly difficult to extract and generate a lot of water consumption and pollution.
